The Danish name of Copenhagen is “København”. Translated into English language København means something like “merchants harbor”.

The foundation of the city took place in 1167. Before Copenhagen was just a little fishing village.

Copenhagen consits of following towns and districts: Østerbro, Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Amagerbro, Nordhavnen (North Habour), Valby, Kongens Enghave (King’s Meadow Garden), also known as Sydhavnen (meaning South Harbour), Christianshavn, Christiania, Sundbyvester (Sundby West), Sundbyøster (Sundby East), Ørestad, Islands Brygge, Bellahøj, Brønshøj, Ryparken, Bispebjerg, Vigerslev, Vestamager and Vanløse.

Amalienborg Palace Copenhagen

Amalienborg Palace is the winter residence of the Danish royals. The building is known to be the most beautiful piece of Rococo architecture in Denmark.

The palace was built in the middle of the 18th century for families of the nobility. At the end of the 18th century the building came into the hands of the Royal Family.

The sophisticated tourist can find a Royal Guard at the palace around the clock. The relief can be seen every day at 12 o’clock noon.

Little Mermaid Copenhagen

The sculpture of the “Little Mermaid” is based on a fairy tale of the Danish poet and writer Hans Christian Andersen.

Some Danish people claims that this sculpture is one of the most photographed statues in the world. But one thing is for sure. It’s the most popular sight in whole Denmark.

The sculpture was made in the beginning of the 20th century by a man called Edvard Eriksen who lived from 1876 to 1958. The disclosure of the statue of bronze took place on the 23th August 1913.

In Denmark the important sight is known as “Den Lille Havfrue”.

In 1964 unknown persons have removed the head of the mermaid during the night. As the old casting mould from 1913 was still available, it was not a problem to make a new head.

Little Mermaid is located in the district of Fredriksstaden.

Øresund Bridge

The Øresund Bridge is an impressive connection over the sea between Denmark and Sweden which was opened in July 2000.

For more than 100 years such a connection between those two countries was just a sweet dream. The finalization of the construction works was celebrated like a miracle. The bridge is one of the largest constructions in Europe and has the lenght of 8 kilometre.

The traveller can cross the bridge by car or by train. In just 20 minutes he can reach the Swedish city of Malmö.

Danish Cuisine

Drinking and eating is never a problem in Copenhagen. You can find a lot of snack bars, and restaurants with dishes from all around the world.

But if you are coming as a tourist, you should take a look and explore the Danish cuisine. This kind of cuisine features the products suited to its cool and moist northern climate. Barley, potatoes, rye, beetroot, greens, berries, and mushrooms can be found in traditional Danish dishes.

The Danish cuisine is quite similar to the cuisine of its neighbour countries like Sweden, Norway, and the north of Germany.

The snack bars in Denmark are called “Pølsevogn”. They sell the traditional red sausages of Denmark called “røde pølser”. They are usually quite long and served in between of a white bread. I have tasted this delicacy myself and I was very delighted about it.

Somebody who likes theatre should also take a look into the Royal Theater of Copenhagen. “Det Kongelige Teater” is the official name of the place, which was built in 1872, and inspired by the Italian Renaissance.
