The plots around the square were only given to very rich people. Only very rich people were able to build noble and impressive houses, and Kongens Nytorv should become a majestical character. Home-builders around Kongens Nytorv had to fulfil certain standards in the height and the architecture of their houses. Today the square profits of the guidelines from those times. Kongens Nytorv is surrounded by a castle, a palace, and other sophisticated buildings.

There is a monument of Christian V. as Roman emperor on a horse in the center of the square.

During winter time Kongens Nytorv serves as a skating rink with many little lights in the treetops.

Grabrodretorv is one of Copenhagens old town most beautiful squares. A very nice character is the calm location of the place. People can relax and start to to daydream.

Sometimes during summer time Grabrodretorv is the venue for theatre plays and live concerts.

The square is surrounded by detailed restored facades and many restaurants. Grabrodretorv has a long history. Already during the 13th century, the place was mentioned in documents. There is a story about crazy monks who lived on todays square. Their wild parties met with disapproval to Copenhagens citizens. At the end the monks had to leave the city, and their houses were destroyed.

Justice was always a very important topic on this square. There is a courthouse which was built in the beginning of the 19th century. In former times Nytorv was also the location of executions by a scaffold.

Don’t expect to find fancy shops or coffee houses around the square. Nytorv is a bit boring in this regard.
