In 1725 its purpose was changed, and it had to serve as a prison. The most famous prisoner was Johann Friedrich Struensee, who lived in the 18th century. He was the personal physician of the Danish king, and the secret lover of the queen.

The construction works for the monumental building lasted from June 2001 until January 2005. The opera has a length of 125 metres, and a height of 24 metres.

Some critical observers think the building turned too big, because the Royal Palace on the opposite looks quite small in comparison. Nevertheless such kind of naggers are the minority. The new opera is undoubtful the pride of Copenhagen.

The golden sculpture above the main entrance is the imitation of Copenhagens founder Bishop Absalon, who lived from 1128 to 1201.

Another interesting sight of the building is the world clock. A clock with twelve running gears, which shows the times of the whole world.

The tower of the town hall amounts 106 metres, has 300 steps, and offers a wonderful view over the whole city.
