Grundtvigs Kirke is dedicated to the bishop known as “Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig”. The church should look modest and monumental at once. The result is a giant cathedral in form of a little village church with space for more than 1.800 people.

The Marmorkirken church in Copenhagens district Fredriksstaden is the perfect example of megalomania in building.

King Frederik V. had the idea to build a church like the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, or the Saints Paul Cathedral in London. When the contruction works started in 1749, the plan of Marmorkirken was imposing. The whole church should be made of marble instead of sandstone. 21 years later Denmarks state coffers was empty. It was not financeable to build a church of marble.

The construction works were stopped, and the building site consisted of several column parts, and marble blocks with a height of 9 metres.

77 years later in 1847, a rich citizen from Copenhagen promised to finish the church, and bought the whole building site. But not according to the plans of King Frederik V. He had his own plans. The church should become much smaller and cheaper. At least the project was finished finally.

Marmorkirken was also finished with sandstone. Not marble. The exceptional building can be found in Fredriksgade 4.

The most impressing thing are the three-storey loge rows inside the building. These rows were dedicated only to the rich people of the community.

The altar was made of Norwegian marble. As Copenhagens German minority decreased during the middle of the 19th century, the church turned to a Danish one, and canceled the label “German” out of its name.

Vor Frue Kirke was rebuilt in Greek-Roman style. This architecture was quite popular in those times. The dome can be found in Norregade 8.

The church is also used as a venue for concerts and cultural events.

Helligands Kirke was the first Danish church with a Dutch carillon. The Dutch carrilon melted, and was destroyed in a fire in 1728.

The erection of Helligands Kirke took place in the 14th century.
