This museum is dedicated to the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen who lived from 1770 to 1844. Thorvaldsen lived almost all of his life in Rome to study antique sculptures. Seven years before his death, he decided to return back to Copenhagen. The city fathers of Copenhagen were glad about such a decision, and nominated him to one of Copenhagens honorary citizens.

Bertel Thorvaldsen showed his thankfulness, and gave his whole art collection, as well as all of his immense fortune, to his beloved home town. The last wish of creating a museum with his inheritance, was not a problem for Copenhagen. 4 years after Thorvaldsens death, the Thorvaldsens Museum opened its gates.
The museum shows many sculptures. Some are originals, some replicas, others only drafts. The inner yard of the museum is the last resting place of the Danish sculptor.
